About

Eowyn Tinsley editor & proofreader

Eowyn Tinsley | Editor and Proofreader

Hi! I'm Eowyn. Yes, I'm named after Tolkien's strong female character in The Lord of the Rings! Being aware of this character, I'm compelled to live life with her traits of bravery, unflinching nerve, and unwavering vision.

Why do I edit?

The fact that my identity is so strongly tied to a story has inspired me throughout my life to view words as a catalyst for hope, motivation, encouragement, growth, and joy. Editing is a natural outcropping of this conviction. I find great joy assisting authors in perfecting their craft to bring their words to the world.

What projects have I taken?

I've edited a diverse list of works, including short stories, works of fiction and nonfiction, websites, blogs, business documents, academic journal articles in multiple fields, dissertations, and college entrance essays.

I enjoy editing for nonprofits, helping them communicate to external and internal audiences. Not only do I edit for correctness and flow, I verify that the text matches the requirements for sensitive information and wording.

On the lighter side, I love children's literature and enjoy helping authors form a story that will be adored by children and adults alike.

I have used the Chicago Manual of Style, APA, and AP styles in my work, and I can incorporate plain language principles to enhance clarity and ease of use.

Do I have any certificates or memberships?

I'm constantly looking for opportunities to enhance my skills.

Most days, you'll find me reading up on writing or editing niches or exploring technology to streamline the process.

In 2022, I received a Certificate of Excellence in General Proofreading from the Proofread Anywhere program.

I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, and I have completed Grammar, Mechanics, and Usage in the editing sequence through UC Berkeley.

What are my other qualifications?

I'm a published author in multiple scientific journals and have a PhD in molecular virology and microbiology. My years writing proposals, requests for funding, informative posters, presentations, and articles, all culminating in a completed dissertation, affect how I approach editing. Scientific writing requires clarity, organization, logical flow, accuracy, and correct vocabulary; it must be persuasive yet unbiased. These traits are beneficial regardless of the genre.

Currently, I teach middle and high school students the fundamentals of writing and grammar, including expository and creative writing.

Do I have a life outside of editing and teaching?

Yes! In my spare time, I enjoy hiking with my family, gardening, reading, cheering for my kids in ballet and soccer, volunteering at church and the dance studio, and exploring both locally and abroad!
